Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease associated with the early accrual of irreversible organ damage, which can have lasting consequences for morbidity and mortality. Organ damage may occur within the first years following diagnosis and can result from ongoing disease activity, recurrent flares, lupus nephritis (LN), and cumulative glucocorticoid exposure. Current EULAR and ACR recommendations for SLE and LN, along with KDIGO guidance for LN, emphasize achieving remission or low disease activity and minimizing glucocorticoid exposure.
