Immunoglobulin Therapy: Immune Modulation and Infection Prevention

November 10 from 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm EST

Innovation Theater A | Supported By: Octapharma

Program Description

Agenda of the session:

Part A

  1. Mechanisms of Action and Clinical Evidence in Dermatomyositis (Prateek Gandiga)
  2. Q&A

Part B

  1. Can Infections from B-Cell Depleting Therapy Be Prevented? (Lisa Christopher-Stine)
  2. Q&A

While intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is widely recognized as an effective treatment for dermatomyositis, its role in rheumatology may extend further to address a growing challenge: the prevention of infections during B-cell depletion therapy (BCDT) in patients with hypogammaglobulinemia and autoimmune and rheumatic conditions.

In this symposium, speaker Prateek Gandiga will open the session with an overview of immunoglobulin therapy in dermatomyositis, consolidating current knowledge and examining the complex mechanisms of action of IVIg. The presentation will also provide practical insights to improve patient outcomes with IVIg treatment.

To explore advanced clinical developments, speaker Lisa Christopher-Stine will subsequently address the risk of infection associated with immunosuppressive treatments, especially amid the increasing use of BCDT in autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. The presentation will detail the clinical implications, current management strategies to reduce infection burden, and preventive approaches under investigation. Among these approaches, particular emphasis will be placed on discussing the potential use of IVIg as replacement therapy to help prevent major infections in patients with hypogammaglobulinemia receiving BCDT for autoimmune and rheumatic conditions.

Each part of the session will conclude with an interactive Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the faculty and further explore the topics discussed.

Boxed lunch will be provided.

For healthcare professionals only. Non‐CME programs ‐ This program is developed and offered by Octapharma. This is not an official function/event of the American College of Rheumatology. This session will be conducted during ACR Convergence 2026.
