Beyond the Joint: The Immunometabolic Burden of Obesity in Knee OA

November 9 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm EST

Regency Ballroom P | Supported By: Eli Lilly and Company

Program Description

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of joint pain, functional limitation, and disability, with obesity recognized as an important and potentially modifiable contributor to disease burden. While the relationship between obesity and knee OA has traditionally been viewed through the lens of increased mechanical load, evolving evidence points to a more complex interplay among inflammatory and metabolic pathways.

This expert-led symposium will explore the evolving understanding of knee OA in the context of obesity and examine the systemic and local mechanisms that may contribute to disease. Faculty will discuss how adipose tissue dysfunction, altered metabolic signaling, and inflammation may interact to affect joint tissues and contribute to the clinical manifestations of knee OA. Speakers will also review evidence on the impact of overweight and obesity on knee OA burden and examine the relationship between weight loss and improvements in pain, physical function, and other knee OA outcomes.

Through expert discussion and practical clinical perspectives, attendees will consider how an expanded understanding of obesity and knee OA may inform a more comprehensive approach to knee OA management. The session will explore the role of weight management within current knee OA guidelines and practical opportunities to integrate weight management into a multidisciplinary approach to care.

This program is developed and offered by Eli Lilly and Company. This is not an official program of the American College of Rheumatology.
