Preconference Review Course to Provide Comprehensive Update on Clinical Care in Rheumatology

The Review Course will again be included in the preconference programming offered before the start of ACR Convergence 2026. The half-day course on Saturday, November 7, offers rheumatology practitioners a comprehensive update through six lectures.

“The Review Course offers practical, high-yield updates on diagnosis and evidence-based management of conditions relevant to adult and pediatric rheumatology from a panel of experts,” said Sarah Lieber, MD, MS, Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Cornell Medicine, one of the course moderators. “Review Course sessions are designed to deliver timely updates to attendees on key topics in rheumatology in a compact and engaging format, incorporating well-crafted presentations with opportunities for audience engagement.”

Attendees will gain knowledge about novel approaches to diagnosing rheumatic diseases across the age spectrum, recognizing rare but serious manifestations of rheumatic disease, and the latest updates in the treatment of rheumatic diseases.

“The speakers were chosen for their teaching prowess as well as their clinical expertise,” said co-moderator Sarah Bayefsky, MD, MSEd, Hackensack Meridian Health and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. “They have also worked with the ACR’s Quality Improvement in Learning and Teaching (QuILT) team to incorporate active learning techniques into their talks and provide for a memorable learning experience for all clinicians.”

The course, 7:45 a.m.–12 p.m., will begin with an introduction by Drs. Lieber and Bayefsky. Featured presentations include:

  • Check Your Knowledge: Management of Rheumatic Diseases Induced by Cancer Immunotherapy—Laura Cappelli, MD, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, will summarize the therapies used to reduce rheumatologic side effects of cancer immunotherapy.
  • Genetics in Rheumatology: What Every Clinician Needs to Know—Laura Lewandowski, MD, MSc, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, National Institutes of Health, will highlight the role of genetics in rheumatology and help clinicians recognize and treat rare conditions that may otherwise go undiagnosed.
  • Reproductive Health for the Rheumatologist—Mehret Birru Talabi, MD, PhD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will discuss the impact of rheumatic diseases and the medications used to treat them on reproductive health at different life stages.
  • Gut Instinct: What’s New in Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Associated Arthritis—Kristi Kuhn, MD, PhD, University of Colorado, will review recent developments in treatment of arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis in Adults and Children—Katherine Wysham, MD, VA Puget Sound/University of Washington, one of the authors on the recently released guideline for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, will explain what the new recommendations are and the rationale behind them.
  • Updates in Polymyalgia Rheumatica—Mike Putman, MD, MSc, The Medical College of Wisconsin, will provide an overview of new drugs used to treat polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).

“Review Course topics were selected following consideration of areas highly relevant to clinical care in adult and pediatric rheumatology, including drawn from multidisciplinary fields or subject to recent diagnostic or therapeutic advances,” Dr. Lieber added.

Each of the featured topics in 2026 is new to the Review Course or has not been included in this preconference programming in recent years.

“Dr. Cappelli’s talk on the rheumatologic effects of cancer immunotherapy, for example, could not have been presented in prior years because we did not have enough knowledge about the impact of cancer immunotherapy on rheumatic diseases,” Dr. Bayefsky noted. “Similarly, Dr. Putman will discuss new treatments of polymyalgia rheumatica that were not available to clinicians in the past.”

An In Person Plus pass is required to attend the Review Course at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

“We hope that the Review Course offers something for everyone in attendance at ACR Convergence, from those seeking foundational content to those looking to refresh or consolidate their knowledge, including in evolving areas,” Dr. Lieber said.

Dr. Bayefsky concluded, “ACR Convergence 2026 will open with a half-day of engaging presentations by top experts in rheumatology. Join us at the Review Course to learn more!”
