While giving feedback can feel intimidating or uncomfortable for some, empowering healthcare professionals to feel comfortable giving feedback to their teammates is essential to maintaining a positive work environment, which, in turn, results in better patient care and outcomes.
This will be an important point of discussion during the Sunday, Nov. 17, session Giving and Receiving Feedback: How to Avoid Common Traps, which will take place from 1–2 p.m. ET in Room 201 of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and be available on demand within 48 hours for registered ACR Convergence 2024 participants.
“As physicians, we are constantly working on teams. And on those teams, successful patient care comes from a successful team dynamic, and that is dependent upon having comfort with and having ease with giving feedback,” said Nicola Orlov, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago Medicine and Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program.
Dr. Orlov will introduce the audience to feedback scripts, which are essentially a framework that people can use when giving feedback about challenging behaviors.
The session will include an interactive activity where audience members will have the opportunity to practice utilizing feedback scripts to overcome some of the “traps” that will be addressed during the session. This hands-on aspect is designed to not only help the audience master feedback-giving techniques, but also to overcome discomfort associated with giving feedback.
The session will also include a presentation by Heather Van Mater, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Van Mater will highlight effective ways to give and receive feedback, how to identify specific feedback triggers, and best practices for navigating around such obstacles while delivering actionable feedback.
